In the Handbook of T'ai Chi Ch'uan Exercises (1996, Weiser Books, page 1), author and practitioner Zhang Fuxing states that the literal definition of the term "T'ai Chi" means "Supreme Ultimate". If one were to travel back in time to ancient Asia, a student would naturally find, within the circles of learned Chinese philosophers, discussions about the origins of life. For these teachers, the reason of existence related to "primary cause [...] of the universe". This primary cause is a creative force that possesses a "soft and tranquil quality". Additionally, Wikipedia (2024) identifies T'ai Chi as being a series of gentle, low-impact exercises; these movements are deliberate and flowing. Practicing such movement with breath makes T'ai Chi deep, slow, and focused.
Having begun study into T'ai Chi years ago in Tampa, it has been firmly established that such practice gives balance to the more cerebral activity of meditation. As such, meditation and T'ai Chi - including any of its variants - are the two sides providing connection to the deeper meaning of life, in whatever way we individually choose to understand such questions.
The manifestation of the Asian arts, for this student, has simplified into routines which are fundamental to living in a better way. In other words, entering that deep, special space through quieting of the mind, and then gently welcoming the day with motion, compliments a person toward becoming a happier heart.
As an extension of meditation instruction, classes on movement are also offered for those in the Prince George's County area of Maryland.
